Finding My Purpose – by Manny Moodley
Life is full of challenges. Some are like gentle whispers, while others are like raging storms. But it’s in these moments of adversity that we’re given a choice: let the flames consume us or find purpose in the fire.
As a young child of eight years old, being diagnosed with a rare, untreatable visual condition (Stargardts Dystrophy) which can lead to blindness is a terrifying position to be in, which left me feeling like the world was crumbling around me.
When faced with obstacles, it’s easy to feel lost and uncertain.
But what if we flipped the script? What if instead of seeing challenges as roadblocks, we saw them as stepping stones to growth and discovery?
Joining Retina South Africa all those years ago really flipped the script for me. I was no longer alone, in fact, there were many people out there living with visual conditions like mine, and they were not only living their best lives, but they were helping others find their place in the world regardless of what level of vision they had.
When I met Retina South Africa stalwarts like Gordon Cousins, Gail Cillie and Claudette Medefindt, they were like mythological titans who knew no barriers or limitations to what could be achieved through hard work and the sheer power of will. The impact these greats have had on me has been immeasurably immense.
My vision for the organisation is to become more efficient and more impactful in all that we do. It is important for us to drive positive change through increasing our advocacy, education youth involvement and para-sport development projects to benefit our members.
Retina SA has given me so much direction and purpose over the years, so when the opportunity for me to take on the more immersive role of CEO of the organisation came along, I was honoured to jump in with both feet because Retina SA has guided, shaped and developed me over the years, and I wish to return the favour. Retina South Africa is my purpose!
Finding purpose is a journey, not a destination. It’s about embracing the unknown, learning from our mistakes, and staying true to ourselves. It’s about finding meaning in the midst of chaos and using that meaning to fuel our passions.
So how do we overcome challenges and find purpose? Here are a few lessons I’ve learned along the way:
- Embracing vulnerability; It’s okay to not have all the answers. It’s okay to ask for help. Vulnerability is a sign of strength, not weakness.
- Reframing perspective; Challenges can be opportunities in disguise. Look for the lesson, the growth, or the chance to develop new skills.
- Staying true to ourselves; Don’t let external pressures define your path. Stay authentic, and your purpose will begin to reveal itself.
- Finding community; Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you. We’re stronger together.
- Practicing self-care; Take care of your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. A healthy body and mind are essential for navigating life’s challenges.
As you navigate your own journey, remember that finding purpose is a process. It’s okay to take your time, to stumble, and to learn. But most importantly, don’t give up. Keep pushing forward, even when the fire rages on.
Your purpose is waiting for you on the other side of fear, doubt, and uncertainty. Go out there and find it.
