Visual impairment may qualify as a disability where it significantly limits a person’s ability to work or function independently, as assessed by a medical professional.

The SASSA Disability Grant is intended for adults who are unable to work due to a physical or mental disability that is expected to last longer than six months.

The grant may be awarded as:

• A temporary disability grant (usually 6–12 months), or
• A permanent disability grant, depending on the medical assessment

Eligibility is determined through both financial (means test) and medical criteria.

To qualify for a SASSA Disability Grant, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

• Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognised refugee living in South Africa
• Be between 18 and 59 years of age
• Meet the means test requirements for income and assets
• Not live in a state-funded institution
• Not receive another personal social grant
• A medical report issued within the past three months is required.

Income and asset thresholds differ for single and married applicants and may be updated periodically. Applicants should confirm the latest thresholds with SASSA.

Applications are free of charge and are usually completed in person.

• Visit your nearest SASSA office
• Request and complete a Disability Grant application form with assistance from a SASSA official
• Book a medical assessment, or present a recent referral if instructed
• Attend a medical examination with a SASSA-appointed doctor, who submits the report directly to SASSA
• Submit supporting documents, including:
  • Identity document
  • Proof of residence
  • Bank statements (usually the past three months)
  • Proof of income, if applicable
  • Proof of marital status
• Receive a receipt confirming that your application has been submitted

While some offices allow appointment bookings through the SASSA Services Portal, disability grant applications cannot currently be completed fully online.

Processing may take up to three months. If the application is approved, payments are often backdated to the date of application.

• Take any existing reports from ophthalmologists, optometrists, or specialists to your assessment
• Bring spectacles, low-vision prescriptions, or assistive device recommendations where relevant
• Be prepared to explain how your visual impairment affects your ability to work, travel independently, and manage daily tasks
• If your application is declined, you have the right to submit a written appeal within 90 days of being notified
