E-News – November 2026

Inside E-News Volume 61 – Research, outreach and ways to get involved

Our November E-News is packed with research updates, community highlights and ways to support people living with retinal conditions.

Optogenetics: new hope from a Nobel Prize discovery

This year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine recognised the scientists behind optogenetics. This technique makes surviving retinal cells sensitive to light. It is being tested in people with conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease. Because it doesn’t depend on a specific gene mutation, it could one day help people with many different conditions. It is still being studied and is not a cure.

Research news

We urgently need to hear from people with Leber Congenital Amaurosis (LCA), aged 5 and older, who may be screened for an important clinical trial. Contact us as soon as possible. The edition also covers Tinlarebant for Stargardt disease and new results from the Beacon VISTA trial for X-linked RP.

Out and about

During World Retina Week we worked with optometrists to offer free retinal screening across the country. In KwaZulu-Natal, we met patients, healthcare professionals and almost 90 members over four days.

Ride for Sight 2027

The 38th Dis-Chem Ride for Sight moves to Carnival City, Brakpan, on Sunday 21 February 2027. Choose from 121 km, 50 km or 12 km, with para-cycling categories for every distance.

Giving Tuesday: Your Rand, Their Sight

On 1 December we take part in Giving Tuesday for the first time, raising funds for genetic testing for families with inherited retinal conditions. You can give now.
