Swing for Sight
The Swing for Sight charity golf day aimed to raise awareness about visual impairments and the challenges faced by those affected. By bringing together participants and spectators, the event fostered understanding and empathy within the community. It also focused on generating funds to support initiatives that enhance the lives of individuals with visual impairments, including medical research and support services.
The event provided a platform for visually impaired athletes to showcase their skills and determination, challenging stereotypes and inspiring others. By engaging sponsors, participants, and volunteers, it created a sense of community and shared purpose. Ultimately, the Swing for Sight golf day promoted inclusivity by integrating visually impaired athletes into mainstream events, demonstrating that sports can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of their abilities.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
The Swing for Sight event was a tremendous success, attracting 136 players and around 35 sponsors. The day featured celebrity participants, thrilling challenges, and the inspiring Retina SA Para Golf Team, who participated with their guides from the South African Blind Golf Association, showcasing their skills and determination, making it a truly inclusive event.
Embracing the funky eyewear theme, Dis-Chem Pharmacies set up a photobooth where golfers could take photos with colourful sunglasses. Each participant received a fridge magnet containing their photo as a memento, capturing the spirit and fun of the day.

VOLUNTEERS
Suzana De Abreu, a passionate member of Retina SA living with Stargardt Disease, played a key role as a volunteer at the Swing for Sight Golf Day.
Despite her visual impairment, Suzana represented Retina SA at Hole 4 alongside Victoria and Lindiwe, (our social workers), where the Hole-In-One challenge took place. Her incredible energy and positive spirit shone as she interacted with players, encouraging their participation and boosting donations for our cause. At Retina SA, we believe in actively including our members in events like these to create awareness and demonstrate that living with visual impairments doesn’t limit one’s ability to contribute meaningfully. Suzana’s involvement not only raised funds but also inspired everyone present!
Thank you to all who made this event a huge success and thank you for taking us one step further in our quest to eliminate retinal blindness.
Join Retina South Africa for our upcoming events, Bowls for Sight 6 October 2024 and the 94.7 Ride Joburg Cycle Race.
