Guide for Educators

Retinal conditions affect vision in different ways. Some children may struggle with detailed near work such as reading and writing. Others may have restricted side vision that affects movement around the classroom. Some experience glare sensitivity or slower adjustment between light and dark.

There is no single solution. Support should be individualised.

Small changes can have a big impact:

• Keep aisles clear and remove trip hazards.
• Improve contrast on stairs, glass doors, and teaching materials.
• Read aloud what is written on the board.
• Use bold, high-contrast print.
• Seat the learner where lighting and visibility are best.
• Allow extra time for reading, writing, and examinations.
• Encourage early use of laptops or tablets where helpful.
• Avoid glare from shiny surfaces or direct sunlight.

Supporting independence is essential. Adapt materials in advance where possible, and avoid over-assisting during lessons.

• Certain supplements, including Vitamin A or beta-carotene, are not recommended for children with Stargardt Disease, Cone Rod Dystrophy, or juvenile macular dystrophies. Educators should be aware of this and liaise with families and relevant medical professionals where appropriate.
• UV-protective sunglasses may be needed outdoors.
• Be aware that vision may fluctuate.
