Same Race, Same Cause, New Home: Ride for Sight 2027 move to Carnival City

The Dis-Chem Ride for Sight, South Africa’s most welcoming race, has a new start and finish line. On Sunday, 21 February 2027, the race village moves from Boksburg City Stadium to Carnival City, just a few minutes down the road.

If you’ve lined up at the stadium in past years, this news might feel bittersweet. It does for us too. Here’s why we’re moving, and what stays the same.

Why we’re moving

Simply put, the race has grown. At the 2026 race, we could no longer fit the whole race village into the space the stadium allows. Sponsors, suppliers and the tents that support riders, families and para-cyclists couldn’t all fit without crowding the site or affecting safety and access.

“Boksburg City Stadium has been home to this cycle race for a very long time, and we remain grateful for that,” said the organisers. “This is not a judgement on the stadium, and it is not a decision to leave Boksburg. What has changed is the size of the race and the race village, not our regard for the ground that built this event.”

What the new venue gives riders

  • More room: space for the full village, including registration, bike marshalling, medical support, recovery, prize-giving, and sponsor and supplier tents.
  • Safer, clearer layout: better separation between riders, supporters and vehicles.
  • Comfort on the day: covered areas, accessible facilities and on-site security for riders, visually impaired participants and their families. Highveld weather in February can’t be guaranteed, so shelter matters.

What stays the same

The race is still on the East Rand, local suppliers and volunteers are still at its heart, and every entry still supports the work of Retina South Africa. You can still choose from three distances:

  • 121 km
  • 50 km
  • 12 km

Para-cycling categories are included.

“We hope Boksburg will see this as the same cycle race, with the same cause, held a short drive from the ground we still think of with real affection,” said Race Director Linsay Engelbrecht. “On 21 February 2027 we would like the city on the start line with us.”
