Refsum Disease (RD)
Refsum Disease (RD) is identified as a rare metabolic disorder characterized by the accumulation of phytanic acid in the body, leading to symptoms such as a retinitis pigmentosa diagnosis, anosmia, polyneuropathy, and skeletal abnormalities. A highlighted case involved a misdiagnosis with Retinitis Pigmentosa for 40 years before the correct diagnosis of Adult Refsum Disease was made.
The most famous person affected by this condition is Chris McCausland, who recently won Strictly Come Dancing in the UK. This underscores the importance of recognizing syndromic features associated with inherited retinal diseases and the need for multidisciplinary care.
The management of RD involves dietary restrictions to limit phytanic acid intake, which can significantly improve symptoms. Increased awareness among eye care providers and the importance of genetic testing are advocated to improve patient outcomes.
