Dis-Chem Ride for Sight Announces Route Adjustment in the Interest of Rider Safety Following Heavy Rains During the Last Few Months in Gauteng

Johannesburg, Gauteng – 6 February 2026 – The organisers of the Dis-Chem Ride for Sight, Retina South Africa’s flagship cycling fundraising event, which takes place on 15 February 2026 at the Boksburg City Stadium have confirmed a late adjustment to the long-distance route in response to severe weather-related road damage in Gauteng.

Following sustained heavy rainfall over recent weeks, a final safety inspection conducted last weekend identified approximately 150 metres of extensive road failure at a key intersection along the original route. The damage extends well beyond standard potholing and includes significant structural collapse of the roadway, rendering the section unsafe for mass participation cycling.

In the interest of rider safety, the organisers have implemented an alternative routing that increases the long route distance from 116 kilometres to 125 kilometres. While the adjustment adds 9 kilometres, it has been carefully designed to ensure a smooth, secure and fully managed course.

“Safety remains our absolute priority,” said the Race Director Linsay Engelbrecht. “The Dis-Chem Ride for Sight brings together professional cyclists, recreational riders, cyclists with visual impairments and participants with other disabilities. Under no circumstances would we expose our riders or volunteers to unnecessary risk.”
The Dis-Chem Ride for Sight is recognised for its exceptionally high safety standards. In addition to comprehensive traffic management and road closures where required, the organising team undertakes proactive route preparation, including the repair and filling of potholes along the course. Only sections that meet strict safety criteria are approved for use, and full road closures are implemented where necessary to protect all participants.

The event is one of South Africa’s most inclusive sporting occasions, enabling thousands of cyclists of varying abilities to participate safely in a professionally managed environment. The route adjustment reflects the organisers’ ongoing commitment to accessibility, safety and excellence, even when faced with unforeseen challenges.
Participants are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the updated route information, which will be communicated via official event channels.

The organisers thank riders, partners, authorities and the cycling community for their understanding and continued support, and look forward to delivering another successful and safe Dis-Chem Ride for Sight.
