World Retina Day & World Sight Day
Every year, World Retina Day is observed on September 28th, highlighting the critical role of the retina in our vision and the diseases that threaten it. Established to educate and raise awareness about retinal health, this day emphasizes the importance of understanding retinal diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration, which can significantly impair vision.
Retinitis Pigmentosa, which was the focus of the very first World Retina Day, leads to the degeneration of the retina, affecting millions worldwide. Since its inception in 2010 this day has been celebrated every year by Retina South Africa.
Culminating in World Sight Day on the second Thursday of October, the Eye-care Awareness Month highlights the global issue of vision impairment and blindness. With the theme “Love Your Eyes Kids” World Sight Day calls attention to the millions of children with vision problems who could benefit from accessible eye care services. This day, rooted in the efforts of the Lions Club International Foundation since 1988 and coordinated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, underscores the necessity of eye health and the impact of accessible care.
Retina South Africa will this year Highlight the risk to children’s eye health due to high screen usage amongst young children. This risk culminates in many children developing myopia, and, without treatment, Myopia can lead to irreversible sight loss.
